Empowering Rural India: The Role of Cooperatives and Self-Help Groups

Cooperatives have played a crucial role in the growth of rural economies, with Amul being a prime example of their success. India has become a global leader in milk and sugar production thanks to the success of dairy and sugar co-operatives. With more than half a million cooperatives and over 200 million members, India now boasts the largest network of cooperatives in the world. Cooperative credit facilities and the distribution of fertilizers and agrochemicals have also been successful in helping farmers. Although political interference and corruption have led to the failure of some cooperatives in India, the movement has changed the country's mindset toward agricultural growth.

Self-help groups have largely worked towards empowering women. In a stimulus package announced by the union finance minister to fight COVID-19, collateral-free loans have doubled for women self-help groups (SHGs) from Rs 10 lakh to Rs 20 lakh. This will help 63 lakh SHGs covering 7 crore families. For instance, Gurdev Kaur Deol, a former mathematics teacher, decided to empower rural women and girls in Ludhiana by starting a small self-help group that now transforms the lives of 300 families by marketing their produce through Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs). There are many other women and NGOs that are engaged in transforming the lives of rural women through self-help groups. The income earned by previously unemployed women through these groups is making them more decisive and independent, ultimately building the nation.

Rural marketing is an approach to identify and seize opportunities to help the people of rural India realize their dreams and aspirations. With a plethora of areas and geographies available for marketers to start, move, and grow with the growing economy of rural India, it is an exciting time to get involved. Rural India is calling out, "Come with us and let's grow together!"
